- Under 21 the minimum period is 12 months.
- 21 to under 25 the minimum period is 6 months.
- 25 or older the minimum period is 3 months.
What tests do I need to take?
To get your Ps you’ll need to pass the following tests:
Hazard perception practice tests
Before you sit your Hazard perception Test, you can complete the Hazard perception practice test on Transport Victoria’s website.
Drive test
Before you take your drive test, be sure to read all the information about what’s involved in the Drive test for a Victorian driver’s licence, on Transport Victoria’s website.
Leave a few days between your Hazard perception test and the drive test in case you need more than one attempt at the Hazard perception test. You need to take your drive test within 12 months of completing your Hazard perception test.
You can book your drive test and pay the appointment fee online or by calling 13 11 71 and pay with Visa or Mastercard or visit a VicRoads Customer Service Centre. If you’re coming into a customer service centre you can pay by Visa, Mastercard, cheque, EFTPOS or cash.
Note that both Visa and Mastercard charge a merchant fee. This fee also applies to all 'contactless' or 'tap and go' payment methods including payWave or PayPass that are Visa or Mastercard branded.
Appointment cancellations and changes
Appointment times for the drive test get booked quickly.
If you need to change your appointment time you can do it online or by calling 13 11 71.
You can only change your appointment and transfer the test fee if you made the booking and you give us at least 24 hours’ notice.
If you don’t provide 24 hours’ notice you will lose your booking and won’t be able to get a refund on your test fees.
If you’re more than 5 minutes late on the day of the test you’ll need to re-book and pay a new fee.
What to bring to your drive test
You’ll need to bring the following to your drive test:
- Your learner permit card. If you’ve lost or misplaced it, bring your original evidence of identity documents.
- Proof of 120 hours of supervised driving in your myLearners app or logbook (if applicable).
- Your vehicle (or your instructor’s vehicle) to use for the drive test. VicRoads doesn’t supply vehicles for the drive test.
- Payment for your driver licence. If you pass your drive test, you’ll get the results straight away and will receive a receipt as proof of your probationary driver licence until you receive your licence in the mail.
Your probationary licence
The type of probationary licence you receive depends on your age. If you’re under 21 years old you’ll receive a 4-year probationary licence with 12 months at P1 level and 3 years at P2 level.
It’s important to read and understand the restrictions and conditions that apply to your probationary licence. Read the licence conditions information on the Transport Victoria website.
